Some people like their dogs hanging on the leash. Some off leash. Others struggle to keep theirs from pulling and running after whosoever. “Ideas” why dogs should be walked the way they are walked vary in drastic manner. Mostly though its what heard or seen on TV as well depending on their own comfort level. For example, dog has to walk behind or by your side and never in front, because then it shows dominance or my dog would not harm anybody or take off. Not a day goes by without seeing people with hierarchy fear or being cocky.
Dogs perspective is very simple; To enjoy all the smells and approach anything that strikes fancy.
“The more restrictions against the nature [of curiosity] the higher interest to break the rules”
When a dog is allowed to explore (sniff, look) tension levels automatically drop decreasing chances of being frustrated. By being frustrated I mean, bad mannered on the leash, towards others and not following your directions. We all fear unknown, why increase fear of the world? On the other hand, constantly holding leash tight creates unnecessary stress for the dog and their owner. Leash is a tool which should be used wisely. Pressure and release principle is the golden rule of walking the dog. If a dog pulls you stop, tension in the leash, proceed when dog turns around to look at you and does not pull. When a dog walks well, leash should be lose. Think of leash as transmitter of your trust and energy.
When a person constantly yanks and forces dog to be by their side, its not an abundant relationship. It drains both from joy they could be experiencing! Going for a walk for most dogs is the highlight of the day! Remember you are dogs whole world!
Feed the curiosity!
Re-direct them with love!
Reward good behavior!
Enjoy life together!
Dogs are simple loving creatures who want to enjoy life. You need to teach and show what is right and what is wrong. Always higher emphasis on the good, because if you will only exaggerate the bad you will create fearful, self-conscious and insecure dog. Same like children, they respond to positive reinforcement with growth of self-esteem and good confidence. It`s our duty to raise healthy individuals. Dog mirrors other end of the leash, now think twice whats the real deal …
Enjoy the walk!
P.S All dogs no matter the breed should be on the leash in public unless it is in safe distance from distractions or possible hazards.
